The Ultimate Storyteller

It seems that we often get caught in this habit of “Preaching the Bible” text by text. I find it interesting when I look in scripture at the ‘Ultimate Storyteller’ (or Jesus), He chose to teach in ways that the people would understand. He had a keen knowledge of Scripture that He used in Spiritual Warfare and in dealing with the Pharasee’s, but in day-to-day life, Jesus met people where they were and explained Salvation in ways that they could easily understand. In other words, He related.

I find it more interesting that the “Scripture Preachers” of the day were the Pharasee’s - indeed, the ones that were missing the very point of the Scriptures.

I am not dis-regarding the Scriptures nor devaluating them. Instead, I am trying to make a point that Jesus used the art of stroy-telling to convey the Scriptures to people. He met them in their everyday life with practical lessons of the love of God and His compassion. Knowledge of the Scriptures is very important, but being able to relate them to people in everyday life is vital.

Media affords us the opportunity to do just that - reach people where they are and relate to them.

When you look at the Scriptures you’ll find many examples of Storytelling. I am reminded of a Scripture in 2 Kings where the prophet disguises himself (costume) and poses a hypothetical situation to the king (storytelling). He proceeds to tell the King that he was in charge of a prisoner, and was ultimately held responsible by his very own life should anything happen to that prisoner. In this case, the prisoner escaped. He asked the King what to do, and the answer was simple -- give your life. At this point, the prophet came out of disguise and pointed out to the King that this is exactly what He had done with God and that he would die for it. Enter - the art of storytelling.

With media ministry you have the opportunity to reach people in all areas of life. Don’t feel the need to preach the scripture and bang them on the head -- think instead of how you can tell them the scripture in every day life where it reaches out and touches them where they are.

I challenge you. Go tell.
